Enduring Legacy of Eloquence

Celebrating Over 175 Years of Debate in Birmingham

Founded in 1846 with the Edgbaston Debating Society’s first meeting, our society has the distinction of being one of the longest running debating societies in Europe. Our archives of minutes, preserved in Birmingham City Library, showcase a lasting legacy of debating contentious topics such as Home Rule for Ireland, Women’s Suffrage, to more recently the failures of the “Great American Experiment” and the ethics of being a Landlord. Historically attracting membership from Birmingham’s “great and good,” including Neville and Joseph Chamberlain, Samuel Gamgee, and guests such as JRR Tolkien, our members have historically been and continue to be integral to the city’s intellectual life.

A Medallion of Heritage and Debate

Symbolism from Edgbaston to the Heart of Birmingham

The Chairman’s Medallion, commissioned in 1984, designed by Dr. Bernard A. Juby, symbolizes the society’s nature and position within Birmingham.

The top two thirds represent the Arms of the Calthorpe family, who were the Lords of the Manor of Edgbaston. The Gavel occupies the position of central authority, while the lower third is from the de Bermingham Coat of Arms, representing Birmingham itself and the two sides of the debate over which the Chairman presides and the YES/NO black and white element of voting.
